TOTD – Baseball & Jesus?!

Senator Brett’s Positively Cynical Thought of the Morning:

The Astros are playing good ball while most people, in general, agree that the world is headed to Hell. It occurred to me this morning that, knowing my luck, there’s probably a good chance that the Astros will make it to the World Series, be up 3 games to 1… and then, BAM, Jesus comes back. And, then it’s me in a lonely seat watching my friends and family float away. The World Series would, most likely, be canceled because there wouldn’t be enough players. Because, if all their post interviews are accurate, all the players love God. They sure do thank Him a lot.

But, don’t worry, football fans… the NFL ain’t goin’ nowhere! Those guys are mostly criminals. Hell, the Cincinnati Bengals wouldn’t lose a soul (literally) and would be the favorites for a Superbowl run.

Something in The Middle of Nothing (Excerpt from “My Little Book of Essays”)

I wrote this when I was nineteen, or twenty. I forget. Anyway, I worked at The Galleria in Houston in retail sales at a now defunct clothing store. For those of you that have never been there, The Galleria has an ice rink on the bottom level, located amidst the stores and restaurants that line Floor One, it serves as not only a tourist attraction, but also a serious training facility. After the normal ice rink hours are over the rink is reserved for “personal” training. And, it’s not scrubs that skate there at that time… medaled Olympians have skated there. Continue reading

For All The Lovers Out There (Excerpt from the short story “The Absence of Tomorrow”)

Excerpt from “The Absence of Tomorrow”

by Senator Brett

She ran into the kitchen and breathlessly asked him, “How… why… do you love me?” And, it stopped him cold.

He turned and looked at her, her face softened by the glow of the amber light. “Why?” he asked. “How, you ask?” And then he paused and added Continue reading

The Christmas Dance (Excerpt from “Sunburnt in December”)

The Christmas Dance (Excerpt from “Sunburnt in December”)

It was Christmas Day and Reb found himself missing yet another holiday back home in Texas. “That’s the nature of the life I choose, I guess,” thought Reb to himself as he slowly Continue reading

TOTD – What I Wish I Meant?

Look, I know that most of the time I probably come across as a cynical bastard. And, I’m okay with that… mostly because I’m a cynical bastard. However, every once in a while I am not. Today’s post is one of those times.

Thought of the Day – What I Wish I Meant?

by Senator Brett

Several nights ago, while spending time with my niece Tessa, I watched the British version of the Japanese animation film “The Secret World of Arriety,” which for those of you that do not know, is based on the classic children’s book “The Borrowers.” The copy that I had included the English subtitles that the Japanese producers of the film included in their DVD set. And, I don’t know about you people, but whenever I watch a film with subtitles I can’t help but read along, no matter how hard I try not to.

In one particular sequence one of the characters says, as they are leaving their home and saying goodbye to someone, “Take care of yourself”… however, the subtitle read, “I hope that you have the best life ever.” And it got me to thinking…

How I wish Continue reading

“Sunburnt in December” – The Long Slide

Excerpt from “Sunburnt in December” – The Long Slide
by Senator Brett

We were driving hard, sliding and hugging through the short easy curves of Pacific Highway 1. Sand, sand, sand on one side of us and looming, open-faced rocky cliffs on the other. Forget the brochures, ladies and gentlemen. Forget the television shows and the commercial advertisement make-up. Trust me, the coastline of Southern California can be a scary place, a very scary place indeed, especially if Continue reading

TOTD – Happy Freedom Day, Aliens!

Okay, this might be a little lazy, but the truth is that I am reposting this for a specific reason. There have been only a few times in my life that I have experienced racism. Actually, I can only recall one other incident… and that was from a cop in Florida who insisted that I was a drug dealer, or had drugs, or was on drugs, or was thinking about drugs… and who had pulled me over for no other reason. Couldn’t even give me a ticket for speeding, but kept me there for a little over half an hour waiting for me to confess. (After the search I met my friends at Waffle House, ate a hearty breakfast, then went back to our campsite and got WAY baked… and then had a wonderful day at the beach! :p )

But, on Monday, at the hospital, I saw blatant racism against Hispanics, in general… and it really pissed me off. I will explain it all sometime soon when I share the entire story (which will be hilarious!). Don’t get me wrong… it was not from everyone on the staff… there were/are some great men and women (mostly the women) that were very helpful and that were actually concerned for everyone. But, there were two bad apples (sorry, male nurses) that actually shocked me because I have been so sheltered that I have never really seen, or heard, true racism.

I really would like everyone to watch the video at the end of this TOTD. It sums up EXACTLY how I feel about this issue. I cannot think of a better way to express my thoughts… so I am sharing this… again. All I ask from my friends, and family, and people reading this (who I consider “friends” now) is to be thoughtful… to think… to mull this issue over in your mind… and no matter the outcome of that… at least there has been a willful thought process… and that is all I want.

Oh, and if you enjoyed this, if it made you laugh, or think, or even want to use the restroom… please, follow the blog, sign up for the email, and “like” my Facebook page. When I get to a 1,000 followers and 200 “likes”… they give all my fans a free car of their choice. Honest to God… I would not lie to you about that! (Disclaimer: Senator Brett is like all politicians… therfore… a HUGE liar!)

Thought of the Day – Happy Freedom Day, Aliens!

by Senator Brett

On today, of all days, may we internally remember that while our country is so divided on so many, MANY, social and political issues… if our spirit is good, our minds are clear, our eyes are awake and our books are laid open and used… then we, as one nation, can accomplish so many great things. Happy 4th of July, everyone.

Although, to be fair, Continue reading
